Rodgers looking for early deals in January

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted he is looking to bring players into the club as early as possible in January.

The Reds are in advanced talks with Chelsea to sign striker Daniel Sturridge, who underwent a medical on Merseyside at the weekend ahead of a proposed 12 million switch.

The Ulsterman was wary of discussing deals in great detail, but claimed he was only looking to bring a small number of bodies in.

He told reporters: "Nothing will be complete until we've signed a player and once we do, I'll have no problem in speaking about who we've signed. But until anything is done on paper, there is nothing to say.

"We'll always do our business privately and in the way we want to do it. As you've seen over the last number of weeks, there are always going to be things written about players, clubs and dealings.

"We're confident we can get some business done early in January, which will really help the squa d. Until that happens, there is nothing really to add.

"We don't want to make many [signings] in January, but the one or two we do I think can make a difference and help us. If we can do that, I think we'll have a good second half to the season."

The Reds recovered from a defeat against Aston Villa to smash Fulham 4-0 on Saturday, despite Joe Allen and Raheem Sterling being rested.

The former Swansea boss felt vindicated by the decision and is now looking for the midfield pair to kick on when they return to full fitness.

He explained: "I felt it was the right time [to rest Allen]. He's also suffering a little bit in and around his pelvis.

"Add into that he has played twice the amount of games at this stage of the season than he had last year. He's been playing in a lot of the games - sometimes up to three games in a week. Physically, that has been a big demand on him.

"It's my job, along with the staff, our gr eat medical team and sports science team here to assess the moments when we can give them a rest.

"The likes of young Raheem as well, he needed the breather and I think you seen in his little cameo at the weekend, the weight lifted off his shoulders by first and foremost signing his contract. I think that has probably been a great relief for him to get that over and done with.

"He had a breather as well and was really bright - and plus he got his haircut and looks like a proper young man now!"
